Book Review: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Talk about a classic story reinvented. The original is one of my favorite books of all time and the only story I’ve ever been able to describe as “delightful” without feeling like a crazy person. Seth Grahame-Smith has reinvigorated the story by taking Jane Austen’s original story and inserting his own zombie plague in the background.

While the love story of Pride and Prejudice plays out, England is plagued with zombies, eating and infecting the major characters’ neighbors and friends. Mr. Bennett has taken the precaution of having his five daughters trained in the art of combat in China, Elizabeth being the deadliest of the Sisters Bennett. The five sisters, Mr. Darcy (who is also a celebrated warrior), and the militia fight to save England from the plague all the while trying to navigate the love stories of Austen’s classic.

While I hesitate to say this reinvention is better, it is entertaining and may bring some new fans to the book who would have never read it before. While Grahame-Smith does an impressive job maintaining the language of the book, such as calling the undead “the unmentionables,” the marriage of Austen and zombies is seamless in some places while clunky in others. Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s bloodthirsty natures accentuate their hate turned love for each other. Being a bloodthirsty warrior suits Elizabeth Bennett well as it makes her stand out from her society more than the poverty or intelligence Austen bestowed on her ever could.

Be aware the story is surprisingly gory with a few illustrations. While gory and absurd, this book is an easy summer read, perfect for sunbathing, as long as you keep the disturbingly creative cover out of view of easily-frightened children.
